Landed in Norway!
After a quick bus ride from the airport we
arrived at our hotel, in a beautiful spot in the middle of Stavanger city. A
few of us went for a walk through the streets before meeting our host, Tore
Laerdal in the afternoon. Tore is the Chairman of Laerdal Medical and Managing
Director of Laerdal Global Health; two great organizations dedicated to
emergency care, resuscitation and helping save lives, both at birth and at the
time of sudden illness or trauma. Our first activity for the afternoon was a tour
of the Norweigan Children’s Museum, where we saw Åsmund S. Laerdal’s original exhibition of childhood toys. The “Anne”
doll is the toy that eventually became the famous CPR manikin, “Resusci Anne,”
which since 1960 has helped save well over 1 million lives.
After the childhood
museum, we took a walk through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town of
Stavanger. These led us down to the water, where we soon boarded a cruise boat
that would take us through a 42km-long saltwater fjord named the Lysefjord.
… And the food. Our
very generous hosts took us to the Helleren Fjord Restaurant right down on the
water, where we sat until the sun went down at around 10pm.
In between all of this
we drank freshwater from the Hengjane Waterfall, looked up at the famous Pulpit
Rock, and watched salmon splash about in the salmon farms.
A very beautiful start
to an exciting trip!
